History of Ceylon Tea
A Scottish planter, James Taylor, first planted tea for commercial manufacturing in 1867-as it turned out at the correct moment. In relation to the traditional spice export that already existed on the island, the British started growing coffee in the first half of the 19th century. However, by 1869, coffee plantations were demolished by tiny damaging insects that caused leaf disease, and the sector collapsed.
The population had no option but to replace coffee plantations with tea plantations in order to revive the plantations. The Lolekonder estate, where Taylor set up his first commercial plantations, became a model for the tea industry’s future development, not only in terms of tea cultivation, but also as an instance of the first tea plant. The planter James Taylor’s archive was also shifted under the Hunt Tea Museum’s hospitable roof.
Sri Lanka primarily generates black tea and is now the world’s biggest exporter of orthodox tea (traditional manufacturing method tea) with a market share of 20 percent. Tea is provided from Sri Lanka worldwide-in over 145 nations. This tiny nation generates over 305 million kg of tea of a broad variety of types per year, representing 10 percent of the world’s tea production.
